Controlling Split AC Units
measurable.energy can safely control split AC systems that run up to 3kW. These are controlled in a structured, monitored way that mirrors normal usage patterns.
1. Control at the indoor unit (safe switching point)
A measurable.energy 13A FCU is installed on the indoor header unit.
- This isolates power only to the indoor unit
- It mimics the on/off behaviour of the room controller or remote
- It does not interfere with internal control logic or refrigerant systems
- It allows us to control availability of the system in the same way a user would.

2. Whole-system monitoring via clamp meters
We install a single-phase or three-phase current monitor on the AC circuit.
- Often, multiple AC units can be monitored with a single clamp
- This gives visibility of total system load (including condensers) and allow us to report on savings from the split system

3. Intelligent control based on real usage
Our platform automatically controls AC availability based on:
- Building occupancy patterns
- Time-of-day schedules
- Real energy usage behaviour
This avoids unnecessary runtime while ensuring comfort when spaces are in use.
4. Verification of real savings (not assumed savings)
Here’s the key differentiator:
- The indoor units are controlled (turned off when not needed)
- The outdoor condenser units naturally stop working because there is no cooling/heating demand
We use clamp meter data to confirm:
- Reduced load on condenser systems
- Actual energy savings (not estimated)
The condensers are not directly switched off, they simply don’t run because demand has been removed.
Why this approach is safe
This method works because it aligns with how AC systems are already designed to operate:
- AC systems respond to demand from indoor units
- Removing demand stops cooling/heating cycles
- Electrical isolation at the FCU is a standard, compliant method of control
We are:
- Not forcing compressor shutdown mid-cycle
- Not bypassing manufacturer protections
- Not introducing abnormal electrical conditions
In Summary
- Switching AC units off at the fused spur is electrically safe
- Avoiding short cycling ensures system longevity
- Controlling indoor units eliminates unnecessary cooling demand
- measurable.energy validates real savings using live electrical data
