How do we calculate carbon emissions?

The m.e Platform uses the carbon emission data from the Carbon Intensity API. The API gives us data that informs us of the mix of different types of energy that is going into the UK National Grid. This mix includes Gas, Coal, Biomass, Hydro, Nuclear, Oil, Solar, and wind as well as imports. From this mix a dynamic gCO2/kWh is calculated and shared through the API every 30 minutes. We take that carbon intensity value and line it up to your energy consumption in a matching 30-minute window. We use this to show you the carbon emissions from the energy that you have used but also to report on the carbon emissions you have saved by switching appliances off.
