Appliance ID: BETA

Appliance ID: BETA is the first public release of the measurable.energy Appliance Identification Algorithm. The Algorithm has been running across all our sockets since our commercial launch in 2022 and is now ready to be used and shown in the Hub.

Appliance ID is a hierarchy of plug-in appliance identification labels based on the extensive energy data we have from different appliance types. The identification of each appliance can be found on the Hub at the socket level:

The hierarchy of labels gives three tiers of labelling depending on the amount of data and confidence our algorithm has in the identification. For example:

When a laptop is first plugged in it will first be identified into a High category first. It will then go into a medium category and finally a low category. Each category gives more information about the appliance but every category can be used to improve energy savings and report on energy patterns.

When looking at an Appliance ID label in the Hub, clicking the plug socket image will show the confidence level of the label as well as provide options for label correction. The more detailed the correction i.e. a laptop rather than a computer, the better for the improvement of the ID algorithms.

If there is not yet enough energy data coming through the power socket, an ‘Awaiting More Data’ label will be shown.

Appliance ID: BETA is in its first public release and it will be possible to see incorrect labels within the Hub. Corrections to these labels will take effect immediately and will help us to improve and the accuracy and confidence levels ahead of future updates.
